What Is HTML5?
HTML defines how web pages look, and HTML5 was part of a series of updates designed to harness the real power of web page design. There likely won't be an HTML6, because HTML5 has become the gold standard with updates to the full solution stack serving as the new releases you're looking for. There are two versions of HTML5. The first is the 5.2 recommendation from World Wide Web Consortium (w3c) designed for web content developers while the second, HTML Living Standard for browser developers, is maintained by Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group (WHATWG).
What's New?
CSS, HTML, and Javascript form the basis of web design. HTML5 SVG governs graphics and is a w3c recommendation as well. Web applications run on those HTML elements as the basis. HTML 5 subsumes HTML4 and XHTML but is backwards compatible with previous versions. Plus, it's more closely compatible with PHP. New APIs include drag and drop, web messaging and web storage, protocol handler registration, microdata, Canvas, text tracks, and timed media playback. There's also a standardized server sent events for automatic updates and better browser support. These new APIs allow better control for web designers. For the Living Standard version, new APIs also include geolocation, web audio (a Javascript audio application), web RTC, and web cryptography API. New features introduce new elements updated for modern website attributes. These include hypertext markup language and the renewed interest in document object model (DOM) scripting. HTML5 syntax also allows MathML inside the document while indexeddb expands storage beyond local storage.
